The LBJ School, the Center for the Study of Race and Democracy (CSRD), the LBJ Foundation, BookPeople and Huston-Tillotson University present a special program to honor the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. Peniel Joseph, LBJ School professor and CSRD director, will discuss his critically acclaimed book, "The Sword and the Shield: The Revolutionary Lives of Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr" on Monday, January 18, 2021. Dr. Colette Pierce Burnette, President and CEO of Huston-Tillotson, will moderate.

He is also the founding director of the LBJ School's Center for the Study of Race and Democracy (CSRD). His career focus has been on "Black Power Studies," which encompasses interdisciplinary fields such as Africana studies, law and society, women's and ethnic studies, and political science. Prior to joining the UT faculty, Dr. Joseph was a professor at Tufts University, where he founded the school's Center for the Study of Race and Democracy to promote engaged research and scholarship focused on the ways issues of race and democracy affect people's lives. In addition to being a frequent commentator on issues of race, democracy and civil rights, Dr. Joseph's most recent book is The Sword and the Shield: The Revolutionary Lives of Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. Colette Pierce Burnette (President and CEO @Huston-Tillotson University) Dr. Burnette, a native of Cleveland, Ohio, joined Huston-Tillotson University as president on July 1, 2015. She is the first female president of the combined institutions of Huston and Tillotson Colleges. Dr. Burnette is a strong proponent of Historically Black Colleges and Universities and civic and community engagement. She is laser focused on finding resources to support a student-centered university. Dr. Burnette’s commitment to being a servant leader and her passion for equity and justice are evident in her leadership positions in the Austin community as co-chair of the Mayor of Austin’s Task Force on Institutional Racism and Systemic Inequities, Board Chair of Leadership Austin, and Treasurer of the Independent Colleges and Universities of Texas. She serves on numerous boards and committees including the Greater Austin Area Black Chamber, Waterloo Greenway, and Austin Community Foundation.
